Chalk Pastel Landscapes

Two day workshop with Pam Vaughan at Nolan on Lovel Gallery attached studio

Explore the expressive potential of chalk pastels.  Looking at historical and contemporary artists you will explore colour, layering and mark-making.  Focusing on chalk pastels you will also experiment with combining them with pencil and light paint or ink washes.  You will then be stepped through creating your own chalk pastel landscapes.

About Pam Vaughan:  Pam works primarily in drawing and printmaking, exploring animals, landscape, and a conversation about ‘aliveness’.  Her practice draws inspiration from Sumi-e-painting, the poetry of Mary Oliver, mindfulness practice, and ideas drawn from contemporary physics research.  Pam has received a national printmaking award and been a finalist in the Sulman, Dobell and Kedumba Drawing Awards.  She has taught extensively across community and education settings, including at Sydney University and the National Art School.

This centuries-old technique has been used by historical and contemporary artists such as Rembrandt, William Kentridge, Loraine Monk and Anett Frey.  It involves scratching an image onto an etching plate.  Participants will be stepped through this process, which includes basic drawing guidance (if required) compositional design, working from their own subject matter, incising, inking and printing the plate, opportunities to explore colour and mixed media, using the press, and documenting finished prints.
